Today is the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Calendar refers to the numbered weeks outside the weeks devoted to Advent, Lent and Easter. During Ordinary Time, we focus on Jesus’ life, His public ministry, and His teachings.
The Gospel today (Matthew 9:36-10:8) tells the account of Jesus summoning His twelve disciples and sending them forth to cure, heal, and make whole those in need.
A well-remembered Jesus quote from this Gospel is “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
Let’s try to answer our Lord’s call to be His laborers. Liturgically called Ordinary, but in our lives this time is anything but ordinary. For many, summer brings a different type of busy than during school months. Jobs, camps, travel, chores, leisure often unravel our well-honed, daily, academic schedule. Your scheduling skills are still in tune so please build in time to harvest. Volunteer some of your time and talent to lift up, give a hand up, console, include, nurture, feed, instruct, learn, and answer His call. Bring others with you. Be a gravitational pull for your friends, teammates, family to harvest with you. Go forth; harvest!
Ordinary time … not this summer! Make it Extraordinary!
